Every uptime monitor I've used works the same way. It pings your site, checks for a 200 status code, and if the page loads, all clear. Green checkmark. Everything's fine.
Except when it's not.
A few months ago I was looking into incidents involving AI chatbots on customer-facing websites. The kind of chatbots businesses embed for support, onboarding, product recommendations. Air Canada's chatbot invented a fake "bereavement fare" and told a grieving customer they'd get a discount that didn't exist. The company had to pay damages. The chatbot had been confidently making things up, and nobody caught it because the site was up. HTTP 200. All systems operational.
That one was embarrassing but relatively contained. Others weren't. Character.AI's chatbot was linked to a teenager's death. NYC's government chatbot was giving citizens illegal advice on wage theft. Google's Gemini had a diversity incident that knocked 4.4% off their stock price. In every case, the site was "up." The monitoring tools said so.
And then there's the defacement problem. Over 50,000 websites get defaced every day. Someone replaces your homepage with political messaging, hate speech, or worse. Your uptime monitor sees a page that loads in 340ms and reports everything is healthy. Because technically, it is. The server responded. The HTML rendered. The content just happens to be something that could end your business.
This is the gap that's been bothering me.
The gap between "up" and "safe"
If you run any kind of monitoring today (UptimeRobot, Pingdom, Better Stack, whatever), you're checking one dimension: is the server responding? Maybe you're also watching SSL certificates and DNS records. That's useful. I'm not dismissing it.
But there's a second dimension nobody's monitoring: is what's on the page actually okay?
Think about it. Your site could be:
- Serving hate speech injected through a compromised CMS plugin
- Displaying inappropriate content from a third-party ad network
- Running an AI chatbot that's gone off-script in ways you haven't seen yet
- Defaced with political or violent imagery after a vulnerability was exploited
In all of these cases, your existing monitoring stack reports green across the board. Because "up" and "safe" are not the same thing.
Why I built AI content monitoring into Monit247
When I was building Monit247, the standard monitor types came first. HTTP checks, SSL expiry alerts, DNS monitoring, TCP ports, heartbeats, domain expiry. The usual set. These are table stakes for any monitoring tool and they work well for what they do.

Who actually needs this
I'll be honest about where this matters most and where it doesn't.
If you're running a static portfolio site with no user-generated content and no third-party integrations, you probably don't need content monitoring. Your uptime checks are enough.
But if you fall into any of these categories, the calculus changes:
AI application builders
If you've deployed a customer-facing chatbot, AI assistant, or any tool that generates text for your users, you have a content risk that traditional monitoring completely ignores. These models can and do produce harmful outputs. The incidents I mentioned earlier aren't edge cases anymore. They're happening regularly enough that Stanford's AI Index Report tracked a 56% year-over-year increase in AI safety incidents between 2023 and 2024.
Sites with user-generated content
Forums, review sites, community platforms. You can moderate at the point of submission, and you should. But content monitoring as a continuous check catches what slips through. Including things that get edited after initial moderation.
E-commerce with reviews and third-party widgets

You're responsible for sites you didn't build and can't always control. A content monitor is an early warning system for problems that would otherwise surface as an angry client phone call. If you're managing multiple sites, the agency monitoring setup is worth a look.
Anyone with compliance obligations
The EU Digital Services Act is in force. The UK Online Safety Act Phase 2 hits in mid-2025 with specific children's protection requirements. If you're required to monitor what's on your site (and increasingly, you are), having an automated check is better than hoping nothing goes wrong.
What the existing tools actually do (and don't)
I looked at what's available before building this, and the landscape breaks into three buckets that don't overlap:
Content moderation APIs. Hive, Sightengine, Amazon Rekognition, OpenAI's moderation endpoint. These analyse content at the point of creation or upload. You integrate them into your application pipeline so that when a user submits a review or uploads an image, the API checks it before it goes live. They're good at what they do. But they can't see what's actually being served on a live page. If your site gets defaced, or a third-party widget injects something, or your AI chatbot starts improvising, these tools have no visibility. They only see what passes through them.
Uptime monitors. UptimeRobot, Pingdom, Better Stack, and the rest. They check if your site responds with a 200 and measure response time. Some offer keyword monitoring (check if a specific word appears or disappears), which is basic string matching. That's a different thing from understanding whether the content is harmful. "The page contains the word 'welcome'" tells you nothing about whether the rest of the page is safe.
Security scanners. Sucuri, SiteLock. They scan for malware, vulnerabilities, and blacklist status. If someone injects a cryptominer into your site, these tools catch it. If someone replaces your homepage with hate speech using clean HTML, no malware, no exploit, just text... these tools see nothing wrong.

The regulatory angle, briefly
I'm not going to write a legal compliance guide here. But it's worth noting that the regulatory direction is clear and accelerating.
The EU Digital Services Act already requires platforms to have systems for detecting illegal content. The UK Online Safety Act is adding children's protection codes. KOSA and COPPA 2.0 are advancing in the US. California's SB 243 specifically targets AI companion chatbots.
The common thread: regulators increasingly expect you to monitor what's on your site continuously, not just moderate at the point of upload. Whether a monitoring tool satisfies these requirements depends on your specific situation, but having automated content checks is a step in the right direction.
Where this stands
AI content monitoring is new in Monit247, and I'm not going to pretend it's a finished product that covers every possible scenario. It monitors text content on rendered pages. It doesn't yet analyse images or video. The harm categories are broad but not infinitely customisable.
What it does do is close a real gap. The gap between "your site is up" and "your site is safe." The gap that let an AI chatbot contribute to a teenager's death while every dashboard showed green. The gap that lets 50,000 defacements happen daily while uptime monitors report all clear.
